this would be backwards incompatible as all hell, imo. It may seem like a better solution to just tell people to live with the display weirdness.

This isn't possible. As noted, it's backwards incompatible. An alternative to change the CSS to work around any legal field name would be welcome, but that's an issue for another ticket when a patch is ready. The issue here is not possible.
