csrf_token does not seem to be working. I reverted to the earlier tutorial and everything worked using the Version 1.1 documentation.

It sounds like you're getting your versions confused. The tutorial for v1.1 doesn't mention csrf_token because csrf_token doesn't exist in v1.1 (well, it does on a technicality, but not in a way that affects the tutorial). The tutorial for the development version won't work with Django v1.1.
