This is obviously the correct behaviour, but a brief note in the [https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/contrib/admin/#django.contrib.admin.ModelAdmin.list_filter ModelAdmin.list_filter] section mentioning this would've saved me 30 minutes with pdb!
